Property	Overseas property	Targeting emerging markets such as Vietnam or cities such as Erbil for example presents an opportunity. Or providing consultancy services for those who wish to enter these markets and avoid the pitfalls.
Minerals	Diamonds, gold, rare	There are still opportunities for earth, oil, iron ore the adventurous amongst us. (see Example #6)

One of my business partners suggested that we explore for diamonds and gold in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He identified diamond and gold rich areas and signed up land with the locals allowing us to extract what we hoped were some valuable mineral deposits. We hired a machine to sort through the gravel and were in business for less than $50,000. It wasn’t the most productive mining concession but it produced a very good return and with someone focused on the ground there are still many opportunities for the adventurous entrepreneur.

Agriculture	Overseas agriculture	Cultivating rice or coffee in West Africa, argan oil in Morocco, jatropha in Cambodia, palm oil in Asia, there are many opportunities to target developing or emerging countries where the land is cheap, and fertile but dormant. (see Example #7)

Overseas agricultural opportunities

My business partner and I obtained a map of Sierra Leone, West Africa. It was like a treasure map! It was prepared by a PHD student who had identified all the productive/fertile farmland in the country. My partner headed to Africa, tracked down the landowners of the most fertile land and signed up 1,000 acres to grow rice on a 40 year lease paying a rent of $1 per acre. Within six months we had cleared the land, built access roads and farm buildings. Opportunities like this don’t exist in developing countries…

Green Energy	Solar, wind, fuel cells	These are all huge growth areas. Mainstream adoption is the goal for any operator and for the customer, affordability and tangible savings. There is space for a credible transparent operator rather than the current fly by nights.
Waste Management	Recycling	Solutions for consumers to recycle their own refuse. (see Example #8)
	Garbage disposal	Finding sustainable alternatives to landfills, garbage incinerators for example. Landfill garbage disposal has moved to transporting garbage overseas to China and Africa. This isn’t a solution.

A few years ago I helped raise money for a company that had designed a cone that could be buried in the garden, where a household would dispose of their leftover food and other decomposable waste. The cone turned garbage into compost for the garden. This was a very popular investment. I notice the Green Cone is still around today doing great things.
