The theme of this week’s newsletter is Own Your Category. What does that mean exactly? Let’s say you sell hula hoops under the brand name, Hula Hoop Fitness. This brand name has a low number of monthly exact match searches (under 90). When someone is looking to purchase a hula hoop they are more likely to type in the term ‘hula hoop’ or in this real life example we are going to look at ‘weighted hula hoop’.
HulaHoop.com is going to be expensive to acquire (it’s actually available!) and covers a very broad category. However, if you decide as an alternative strategy to target a niche such as weighted hula hoops, firstly, the .com is affordable ($1,750 on GoDaddy) and secondly you get to own the category.
Owning the .com provides you with credibility in your space. In this example the term ‘weighted hula hoop’ generates over 18,000 keyword searches every month. Assuming that on average 20% of these searches visit your website, that’s around 3,600 visits. With a cost per click of let’s say $0.75 that means your investment in a good domain name such as WeightedHulaHoop.com is worth up to $2,700 a month in free advertising. Depending on what you pay for the domain name that’s a benefit worth grabbing hold of.
This strategy can be applied to many fields, from sneaker auction (450,000 keyword searches CPC $1.30) to home valuation (22,000 keyword searches CPC $5.67), from home cook (12,000 keyword searches CPC $9) to neck pillow 60,000 keyword searches CPC $2.40).
This strategy can be applied if you are already in business and have a branded domain name with only a few exact match searches. Here you can simply buy an exact match domain and channel the leads to your existing site. On the other hand if you are looking for a new business idea, have limited capital and want to start with a bang buying an exact match domain name is a strategy worth considering.
