Sector	Opportunity	Specifics
Hospitality	Themed restaurant/bar	Look at what is working overseas. Investigate unique foods that haven’t been served in a restaurant format before. Look at new formats. (see Example #1)
	Food delivery	This area has exploded. The opportunity could be to open a kitchen specifically for food deliveries. (see Example #2)

Example #1

Sushi was a new type of restaurant format, imported to the UK from Japan by Simon Woodroffe he named it Yo! Sushi. There have been many restaurant and bar formats invented over the years. Some offer retail space, open kitchen, cookery lessons, cocktails, ping pong, pool etc. Looking at what is working overseas is the best way to come up with new ideas in this area.

I opened a bar/restaurant branded under the famous ‘Cosmopolitan’ name which offered a diverse range of products including, takeaway, cocktails, formal dining and beauty. It failed spectacularly. Not deterred from that failure I opened a bar called Bunker, which was a trendy version of a German bierkeller. This was reasonably successful however it was hit hard by the London terrorist attacks. Opening new restaurants and bars is high risk, but can be very profitable.

Example #2

Huge amounts of money are being invested in the food delivery sector and with a few exceptions most of the operators are losing money. The founder of Uber, Travis Kalanick, has the right idea . He has set up a business that provides space for kitchens to operate from, providing food exclusively for delivery services. It is worth exploring offering a similar service. Think WeWork for kitchens.

	Organic foods	Farmers market in your local area. Provision of your own line of organic foods.
	Food markets	Rent land and attract various food stalls. Take a look at what Time Out have achieved in this area. You could do something on a smaller scale.
	Catering services	Offering something different to the standard fayre which is generally unhealthy and lacks imagination. Opportunity in offering outsourced catering to organizations or consultancy services.
Entertainment	Children’s entertainment	There are always new formats popping up from trampolining to lazer wars to parkour. Go Ape is a great business to look at in this sector. There’s always room for another exciting format. (see Example #3)

Example #3

Children’s entertainment

I had an investment in a ‘kiddies ride’ business. This company owned rides you see outside supermarkets and cinemas, coin operated rides that children insist upon sitting on as soon as they spot them. It was a profitable business, but it was reliant on the supermarket chain, in this case Tesco, who eventually terminated our agreement which led to the demise of the business. A new type of ride or entertainment option is a potential idea.

Beauty	Beauty spa	Nails, hair have been done. But there is always room for another format. perhaps a focus on men. Maybe a mobile barber or hairdressing Service.
	Beauty products	Organic products. Gym friendly makeup is a potential growth area. Olive or argan oil based skin products could be interesting. Are these popular in your home country? Is there an import opportunity? Could you create your own? (see Example #4)

Beauty products

I recognised an opportunity to sell miniature sized beauty products and toiletries through vending machines in health club locker rooms. We signed up all the top health clubs in the UK and rolled out our vending machines to over 500 clubs. I sold that company to another vending machine operator which floated on the London Stock Exchange. Vending machines are still a lucrative business if you can think of the right format.
